As a play therapist I feel that children learn and grow through the outlet of play and this philosophy fits so perfectly into a preschool. I am lucky enough to get to share that outlet with all the students. I visit each classroom to allow the class to share a play experience using sand trays and miniature toys. I follow a guidance program that is designed to teach interpersonal problem solving skills and prosocial beahvior.
Child development at the preschool age is happening so rapidly that everyday marks a new milestone. As parents of preschoolers we all face the daily hurdles of caring for our children, not to mention the unexpected that enters into our lives. These are all things for which I am here to help.
I am often questioned about what could people possibly need a counselor for in a preschool. The answer to that question is many things. I am available to you as parents to talk about anything related to your child’s social, emotional, physical, or cognitive development. I have found that when parents have a chance to verbalize their concerns and process what might be done, things begin to happen. I do not know all the answers but I will do my best to help you walk through the situation and point you in the direction of the right resources if need be.
Below I have listed some of the many subjects I have met with parents about over the years. I hope that by looking at this list you will begin to understand that I am here to help out in any way I can. No subject matter is too small or too big.
Behavioral development- tantrums, discipline methods, aggression, defiant behaviors, behavioral changes, developmentally appropriate consequences, shy/withdrawn behaviors, separation anxiety, anger, fears/worries, modifications for the classroom based on behavioral needs
Social development- sibling relationships, peer interaction, sharing, getting along, joining in, play date problems, teasing, bullying, and gender issues
Physical development- eating or feeding concerns, sleeping habits, occupational, physical, or speech therapy referrals, modifications for the classroom based on physical needs
Cognitive development- kindergarten readiness, emergent learning skills, developmental milestones
Family issues- moving, new baby, illness, death (pet, grandparent etc.), sibling/parent hospitalization, separation/ divorce, family trauma, addiction
